Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. She was not allowed to perform by her parents until the age of adulthood because they were afraid of the stress it would result in. Perry was shy during high school and did not act. Her first acting experience was at Northwestern University to gain friends as she transferred from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry went into New York to search for TV work, landing a few roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California and she was able to find theatre jobs. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway with her in The Other Place, in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry appeared nine times in The Family, an ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. Perry was a regular character in the ABC drama about politics Scandal that starred her dad. She also played the older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon - an CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. The role was given to her through audition, regardless of the fact that she was a cousin to the character.
